Samaritan's Purse is on the ground in Jamaica following the catastrophic destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa. We airlifted an Emergency Field Hospital to the island on Sunday and opened it today in Black River—one of the hardest-hit areas. The local hospital was demolished by the storm.
Our team of relief specialists, including doctors and nurses, worked day and night to set up this more than 30-bed facility so that patients could be seen as soon as possible. The field hospital is equipped with an intensive care unit, an operating room, an emergency room, an obstetrics ward, and a full pharmacy. We can serve up to 100 patients per day.
Since the hurricane struck last week, we have airlifted about 100 tons of emergency supplies to the island nation, including shelter materials, hygiene kits, solar lights, community water filtration systems, blankets, and more. We praise God for our network of over 200 local churches and community leaders as we partner with them to distribute these items to those in greatest need. More airlifts are scheduled in the coming days to bring additional aid.
Please continue to pray for Jamaica and all those affected by the hurricane. The western half of the island is truly devastated, and we will be working there for a long time to come. Please keep our teams in your prayers as they work to provide relief and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sincerely,
Franklin Graham
President, Samaritan's Purse
